Martha Sturdy
Born and raised in British Columbia, Martha Sturdy has always been inspired and guided by the elements. Materials like brass, steel, and salvaged cedar find expressions in her work— offering a reflection of a landscape that is itself bold, clean, and strong.
Martha has always been enthralled with the scale of nature on the West Coast. Never delicate, but always pared down, her work finds a balance in its weightiness and a resolve in its proportion. Each piece is an investment in aesthetic and function. At Martha Sturdy Inc. pieces are meant to be passed down from generation to generation. The work is created by and engenders a sense of confidence in those who are close to it.
Martha and her work are always engaged in a conversation of scale. In 1978, with the limited resources of a young art school graduate, she was forced to adapt the proportions of her work. Her yearning to create large pieces could not yet be fulfilled and so she began working in a scale accessible to her— creating uncommonly large, wearable sculpture.
Martha went on to gain an international reputation as a leader in functional art and design. Her bold, iconic wearable sculpture was feature in ELLE, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazarr. As her creativity evolved, her collection developed into a series of sculptural home furnishings using resin, steel, brass, and salvaged cedar.
Martha’s studio has since expanded to provide sophisticated, enduring custom furniture and fixtures for upscale retail and hospitality clients including, Louis Vuitton, Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Four Seasons, and Fairmont.
Quality, integrity of design and balance are signature elements of each Martha Sturdy piece, all individually made to be enjoyed, touched, used, and seen for years. Martha has taught us, creativity and beauty should be evident in everything we do. A well articulated space supports peace of mind, and peace in general.
